I love OpenStreetMap (OSM). The maps may be less acurate that Google's or its sieblings, but when I see an error, I can fix it ! And by the way, it's really free with no drawbacks (ads...).

For the school's association, we had decided to give a service of localization to the parents, with an editable field for each parent. After having tried Google Maps, I quickly gave up : huge security holes, and no possible customization.

So I built a tool based on OSM. Its purpose is to :

1. Display a map, with the village fitting the screen. Any parent having entered information is represented by a pin. Special points get special colors. Usual map navigation : zoom, scroll, etc
2. When clicking a pin, a popup displays the parent information, plus a textbox to send an email to the parent without any email address being published. The parent receiving the email gets a link to the originating parent's point on the map.
3. To place one's point, the parent only right-clicks on the map, which displays a popup pinned at that place. After filling the information and agreeing on the terms of use, the point is submitted and immediately visible to others.

The software can run :

1. standalone, with a static hidden list of authorized emails, without password authentication
2. integrated with a Concrete5 CMS, so that credentials and information are stored in the C5 database. Access is then fully secured, with an additionnal sudo feature.

My software has been used since summer 2011 by the school http://apepm.fr 4 years on a very active and rich blog, and finally moved to a WordPress blog. It has saved the author's life !
